The Big Sister Programme 2018 The WINGS Programme 2018
Big Sister is a selective mentoring programme that has
run between Wynberg Girls’ High School and our school
for the past 9 years. It is organised and led by Grade
11 and 12 girls from the Wynberg Girls High School
(under the supervision and guidance of their school
social worker, Mrs Eakin). A group of our Grade 5s
were invited to participate in the programme this year.
Each girl was paired up with a high school girl. The Big
Sisters were specially selected and underwent intensive
training in Peer Interaction and Guidance; remaining
under close supervision throughout the programme.
The “Sisters” met at the High School weekly, where
together they participated in fun activities and group
discussions. Our girls benefited greatly from having
some one-on-one time each week with an appropriate
and inspiring role model. Positive feedback from both
Big and Little Sisters showed us that the Big Sister
Programme continues to be an enjoyable experience
on both sides. Modelled on the Big Sister Programme; WINGS is a
Wynberg Girls’ Junior School initiative. The concept
remains the same: A mentoring programme involving
an older and a younger learner. But in this instance,
we have our very own Grade 7s step up as the “Big
WINGS Sisters” while our Grade 1 – 3 girls are invited
to participate as “Little WINGS Sisters”. The group met
weekly, under the watchful eye of
our school social worker, Mrs
Alfino. Games were played,
laughs were had and
memories were made.
It was a truly special
experience, with a few
of the girls wishing
that the Programme
could go on forever!
