Gra
Camp
Excitement filled the air as the buses arrived for our
Grade 7 camp. At 8h30 we loaded all our girlie goodies
onto the bus and waited patiently to leave. It was a
long trip to Villiersdorp, but the trip went by quickly
with everyone singing the latest songs all the way there!
When we finally arrived, the organisers explained the
rules and what was going to happen that day. When
it was time to choose our cabins everyone dashed
off in different directions – but in the end everyone
got to where they wanted to be! After a short while of
unpacking and settling in a whistle blew and we had to
go to the hall and were placed into our camp teams.
Our first activity was an obstacle course. We had to
rush our way through climbing, running, jumping and
even crawling through some mud. It was very tiring! Our
hard work paid off because when we were allowed a
break, we could choose to swim, buy goodies at the
tuckshop or sit and relax and catch up with friends.
Our next activity involved “rescuing” a friend who had
“broken” her back in the forest! It was quite a challenge
making a handmade stretcher, putting the injured team
member on top of it and hoping that they got carried to
safety and didn’t fall through the stretcher! After all our
hard work, dinner was delicious! After a hearty meal we
were ready to shower and jump into our jarmies, but
instead we had to jump into a warm jacket and put on
our hiking shoes! A night hike was our final activity after
which we all crashed into bed, sleeping peacefully after
all the fresh air and physical activity.
The next morning was tiresome having to get up after
a late night. Before breakfast we had a weather activity,
followed by a nature walk. As our energy levels dropped,
the organisers gave us a hearty breakfast to see us
through the morning. Excitement rose as we were told
we were doing a water activity! What we had to do was
hold an unsteady frame with an empty ice-cream tub on
top of it. We had to climb through the frame with two
sponges and let the water absorb it. Rushing down a hill
with our clothes wet, we had to squeeze the remaining
water into the ice-cream tub. It was super difficult not
to drop the ice-cream tub. Free time was upon us with
amazing burgers and potato wedges for lunch.
Later that afternoon we went to a nature reserve
where we saw camels, rabbits, tortoises and so
much more. The most exciting part of camp was
rock climbing!!! While some girls were rock climbing,
others participated in an air obstacle course. During
free time we were again allowed to buy goodies at
the tuckshop and swim. As evening approached and
