WPA Member Spotlight: Tyrone Konecny

This month's member spotlight is with WPA President, Tyrone Konecny.

Could you share how you initially got involved with the Western Pallet Association and what moti -vated you to join?

My journey with the WPA began in the summer of 2011 during a memorable fishing trip with Trace Sutter of Spokane Forest Products and Tom Worthen of Wasatch Pallet. It was my first time meeting Tom, who was then the WPA president. Over a day of reeling in a ton of fish and sharing stories, Tom’s enthusiasm for the WPA’s vibrant community and its many member benefits instantly won me over.

His passion for the association’s role in fos- tering collaboration and innovation inspired me to join, and I attended my first WPA Annual Meeting the following January. That experience marked the beginning of a rewarding journey that has enriched both my professional and personal life.

In what ways has membership in the WPA added value to your professional life or business? Can you share a specific example or story?

The value of WPA membership has been immeasurable, opening doors to new oppor- tunities, relationships, and insights. A standout moment came in my first year when I won the membership contest and was appointed Membership Chairman by Tye Winsor. This role provided an incredible platform to connect with industry pro- fessionals, many of whom have become trusted friends, valued customers, and reliable suppliers over the past 13 years.

Volunteering with the WPA has been a transformative investment, fostering mean- meaningful relationships and creating career-defining opportunities that continue to shape my work in the pallet industry.

What are some of the key challenges you have faced in the pallet industry? How has the WPA helped you navigate them?

As a supplier, one of my biggest challenges has been staying ahead of the dynamic market conditions that pallet manufacturers face, from vastly fluctuating prices to supply chain disruptions. The WPA has been an invaluable resource in addressing these challenges. Through the monthly WPA Magazine, Master Learning Groups, the Annual Meeting Speaker Program, and countless networking opportunities, I’ve gained access to cutting-edge insights and real-time industry trends. These resources have enabled me to stay closely aligned with the evolving needs of manufacturers, ensuring I can provide solutions that are both timely and effective.

From your perspective, what are the emerging opportunities or challenges for the pallet industry?

The pallet industry is at a pivotal moment, with both exciting opportunities and complex challenges on the horizon. One of the most promising avenues for growth is deeper engagement with the WPA’s four committees. By actively participating in these groups, members can stay ahead of emerging trends, such as sustainable pallet design and automation, while preparing for challenges like regulatory changes or material shortages. These committees provide a forward-looking platform to address current issues and shape the industry’s future, making them a powerful tool for any member.

Advice for New Members:

What advice would you give to new members of the WPA to maximize the benefits of their membership?

My advice to new members is simple: dive in headfirst and get involved! Explore the WPA’s many opportunities, from webinars and committees to networking events throughout the year. Make it a priority to attend the Annual Meeting—it’s a game-changer for building connections and staying informed. Consider serving on the Board of Directors to amplify your impact. The more you engage with the WPA’s vibrant community, the more you’ll gain from its resources, relationships, and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.
