Daniel Burgess made his first table in 2012 when a 130-year-old oak tree measuring nearly 5 feet across fell in his mother ’ s yard during the derecho . His daughter was getting married the next summer so he decided to use the tree to build her a dining room table as a wedding gift .
“ I make just about anything . From cradles , to cutting boards to dining room tables , benches , mantles – I like the freedom of doing what enters my mind today ,” he said .
To date , every piece of wood he has used has been harvested from a natural event that has caused the tree to no longer be able to sustain itself .
