As we start 2023 in West Virginia , many people are committed to helping our state make progress toward both individual and community health . Humana is making strides toward improved health at both the community and state levels through collaboration . Negative health behaviors , premature death and preventable hospitalization are of particular focus due to West Virginia ’ s low overall health ranking .
In 2021 , Charleston was designated as Humana ’ s 18th Bold Goal Community . What does this mean for the community ? It is a dedicated focus to improve the health of the people and communities Humana serves by addressing social needs and making it easier for people to achieve their best health . Initial efforts focus on community discovery , building relationships , board of directors creation and convening and collaborative meetings .
“ Health equity and the overall health of a community are instrumental to the health and well-being of so many ,” says
Eric Bohannon , Humana ’ s Midwest Medicare president . “ Humana is a part of this community and invested in creating an equitable health care ecosystem , so every person has the opportunity to reach their full health potential .”
The brick-and-mortar Humana Charleston MarketPoint Office grand opening and community day took place in July 2021 , quickly followed by over 20 Humana collaborations , including :

• Active Southern West Virginia and Owl Health facilitating community chair yoga
• United Way , The Salvation Army , Charleston Police Department and Mayor Caviler distributing cleaning supplies , water and food boxes during flood relief efforts

“ It is wonderful to have a community partner that understands our mission and helps build collaborative opportunities , especially one with the strength and reach of Humana ,” says Jennifer Waggener , executive director of Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley . “ We ’ re excited to see what we can do together in 2023 and beyond .”
Co-creating solutions to address social determinants of health and healthrelated social needs can directly address top health barriers for the community , including lack of nutritious food , physical activity , obesity , diabetes and social isolation . Connecting action to these health barriers is a top priority for Humana ’ s Charleston Bold Goal Community , joining the greater organizational goal of addressing the whole person ’ s needs .
