Quick Connections Speed Networking with the Stars As part of the first-ever Young Guns All-Class Reunion, West Virginia Executive (WVE) held a speed networking event following the “American Pain” presentation by West Virginia University Professor John Temple. Sponsored by West Virginia House of Delegates Representative Doug Skaff, a member of the Young Guns Class of 2013, the event was designed to bring together the state’s best and brightest to develop helpful connections, create relevant business contacts and share innovative solutions. “Once I heard about the Young Guns speed networking event, I was eager to sponsor as a way to give back to my peers and show my respect for them and their accomplishments,” says Skaff. “Networking events are so important within our state because we have so many great people with amazing accomplishments, and events like this give us a chance to learn about and celebrate their successes. My favorite part was meeting many new people from across the state of similar age and ambition while also learning more about those I already knew.” The speed networking event, which was held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Charleston, gave participants the opportunity to connect with one another and share interests and contact information in two-minute rounds. The WVE staff hoped this would help people feel comfortable skipping the small talk associated with typical networking in favor of discussing the state’s most important issues and potential ways they could collaborate in addressing them. “Speed networking was a nice shake-up to the norm,” says Kim Moyers, market president of First United Bank & Trust and member of the Young Guns Class of 2017. “At some point in our careers, we get a bit complacent in networking, so it was nice to be put back on the spot and be reminded of some of the things that truly help us connect with other people. I think it helped me get back to something fundamental about how to quickly make strong engagements. Events like this are really important because we don’t always do a great job of highlighting ourselves or speaking up about the great things that are happening in this state that others aren’t always aware of. It is important to showcase what is here and to have the opportunity to engage with others on ideas and projects that may be in the works that will take us into the next generation.” Participants engaging in speed networking at the Young Guns All-Class Reunion.
