If you spend any time with Dr . Mark A . Manchin , president of Glenville State University ( GSU ), you will likely hear him express his love for education as well as the Mountain State . With deep family roots in the state and a passion for education and the betterment of others , Manchin has proven this time and time again .
Born and raised in Farmington , WV , Manchin attended public schools in Marion County . His early years were marked by a strong sense of community and an emerging passion for education . He pursued higher education at Potomac State College , where he played on the football team . In 1976 , he completed his undergraduate studies at Fairmont State College .

Continuing his academic journey , Manchin received a master ’ s degree in educational administration from West Virginia University in 1982 . He furthered his expertise by earning a doctorate in educational administration with a minor in curriculum and instruction from WVU in 1986 . His extensive educational background equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in various roles within West Virginia ’ s educational system .
Manchin ’ s professional career spans nearly five decades ; during which he has served as a teacher ; state senator ; school superintendent in Webster , McDowell , and Harrison counties ; and executive director of the School Building Authority of West Virginia . Each role has allowed him to impact the lives of countless

individuals , fostering growth and development within the educational landscape of the state . On July 1 , 2020 , Manchin began his tenure as the 26th president of Glenville State University , marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career .
Reflecting on his achievements , Manchin says his greatest success is seeing those who he ’ s had in classrooms or those he ’ s met along the way find success .
“ There ’ s no other profession that can make a difference in somebody ’ s life quite like education ,” he says . “ Our ability to get it right is often in direct correlation to a student ’ s success .”
His travels throughout West Virginia often bring him face-to-face with former students .
“ That makes me proud — knowing that the time I ’ ve spent in public service and public education has strengthened and encouraged others .”
The Manchin name is well-known among West Virginians , a legacy of public service and dedication he upholds with great honor . He speaks fondly of his father , A . James Manchin , who was a prominent figure in the state .
“ As a young boy , I watched my father interact with people from all walks of life ,” he says . “ He knew that listening to their stories and taking the time to get to know them meant a great deal .”
This legacy of empathy and love for West Virginia has been a guiding force in Manchin ’ s life , shaping his approach to leadership and education .
On GSU ’ s campus , Manchin is a familiar and approachable figure . When not in his office , he can often be found conversing with students , hearing their stories and reflecting with them on their hometowns . He believes connecting with students and relating to them in a deeper way opens the door of communication . His hands-on approach and genuine interest in the lives of his students foster a strong sense of community and pride within the university .
When asked what he is most proud of in his career , Manchin highlights his work with educational leaders to go above and beyond for every West Virginia student .
