in mass excavation and site development . In recent years , the second generation finds themselves facing the balance of risk with conservatism while directing the company its direction based on market conditions .
Today , KSC is an award-winning contractor working primarily throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian regions . Its resume includes mass excavation and grading , energy , roadway and aviation transportation , commercial development and specialty civil construction . On average , KSC moves about 9 million cubic yards of material annually for projects , benefiting the public with roads , bridges , utilities and developments .
“ It is awesome to drive through the seven states we work in with my sons and show them projects we built that provide jobs and opportunities for the local communities ,” says Kittredge .

The siblings echo each other ’ s faith in team members at KSC and pride for what they bring to the firm .
“ One of our greatest successes is the growth of an enterprise that provides careers to our community ’ s most valuable assets ; our people ,” Kittredge says . “ Such growth means more career opportunities while building the critical infrastructure that facilitates other industries like tourism , logistics and health care to flourish in our region .”
Art and Virginia remain active at KSC and the sibling team credits them with the culture they ’ ve built at the company .
“ We are a family business and aim to create a work environment that makes everyone feel like part of the family ,” says Lioi .
A constant with both generations has been their unwavering support of community . Family members serve on

numerous boards of directors for civic organizations including local parks , the American Heart Association , Big Brothers Big Sisters , The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences , Patrons of the Park and Rotary Club . Additionally , Kittredge served in roles as president of the Mountain State Young President ’ s Organization and a board member for Associated Builders and Contractors . He is a 2001 Leadership West Virginia graduate and remains active in the Project Management Institute . Lioi is currently serving on the board of directors for the Contractor ’ s Association of West Virginia ’ s Scholarship Foundation . The company supports numerous activities for employee ’ s children , as well .
There ’ s a third generation on the horizon . Kittredge , Lioi and Randolph all have children of their own who may well continue the family tradition at KSC . •
