Beckett Named NRHA’ s Rural Health Practitioner of the Year
The National Rural Health Association( NRHA) has announced its 2017 Rural Health Award recipients, and among this year’ s honorees is Donovan Beckett, D. O., of Williamson, WV.
Beckett returned to his hometown of Williamson in 2003 to serve his community after graduating from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He opened a family practice there and joined efforts to reinvigorate the community through his clinic. Many of his patients had little or no insurance, so he started hosting a free clinic one day a month— then several days a week. This led to his decision to transition to a nonprofit, federally qualified health center. The Williamson Health and Wellness Center, located in a renovated building downtown, is the parent organization of the Mingo County Diabetes Coalition and Williamson Farmer’ s Market. Beckett and his staff prescribe healthy eating with vegetable prescriptions filled on-site and follow-ups with diabetes educators and community health workers in the same location to improve coordinated care and health outcomes.
The winners, including Beckett, were honored during NRHA’ s 40th Annual Rural Health Care Conference in San Diego, CA.
