WVFF Celebrates Milestone in Fight Against the Opioid Crisis

With nearly $ 17 million committed directly to West Virginia communities, West Virginia First Foundation( WVFF) has officially completed its Initial Opportunity Grant( IOG) program— a significant milestone in the state’ s effort to combat the opioid crisis and foster the development of stronger, healthier communities.
Launched in October 2024, the IOG program was designed to jumpstart innovative, community-driven solutions to prevent substance use disorder, expand treatment and strengthen long-term recovery. The WVFF received 174 applications from organizations determined to address this epidemic headon. In December 2024, the WVFF Board of Directors approved $ 10.4 million in funding. To ensure all applicants had a fair chance, the WVFF opened a supplemental round for organizations with incomplete applications to cure deficiencies and be fully considered. At its March 2025 meeting, the board approved an additional $ 6.21 million after the supplemental round, bringing the total investment to nearly $ 17 million.
“ We are honored to invest in organizations leading the charge in West Virginia’ s response to the opioid epidemic,” says Jonathan Board, executive director of the WVFF.“ This milestone would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our board of directors, the Initial Opportunity Grant committee and our expert panel. Thanks to their commitment, vital resources are now supporting the development and delivery of life-saving programs in communities across the state.”
Grants are supporting a diverse range of initiatives, including prevention education, treatment services and long-term recovery support. From rural health providers to grassroots organizations, recipients are now equipped to expand life-saving work across the state.
