A Long History of Serving West Virginia
Poca Valley’ s first location in Walton, WV, opened in 1908. They opened their first branch office in 1987 in the adjacent town of Clendenin, in Kanawha County. In the 1990s, they opened two more Kanawha County branches, Elkview( 1990) and Sissonville( 1997). In May 2022, a fourth Kanawha County location opened with a branch in Kanawha City.
Poca Valley added a Putnam County presence with two branch openings in Poca( 2000) and Winfield( 2001). In 2005, they opened a second Roane County location in Spencer, the county seat of Roane County. Today, Poca Valley is the only bank headquartered in Roane County.
Poca Valley’ s holding company, Poca Valley Bankshares, Inc., was formed in 1993 enabling expansion into non-banking ventures. The first such venture, Poca Valley Insurance & Financial Services Inc., opened in 1996 offering a broad range of non-bank insurance and investment products. The name was later shortened to Poca Valley Financial( PVF) and now serves as a dba under The Poca Valley Bank umbrella.
Poca Valley’ s affiliate, Hays & Company, was purchased by the holding company in 2004. This Spencer-based company, which was founded in 1946, specializes in the distribution of oil and gas proceeds to working-interest and royalty owners. Hays & Company also provides bookkeeping and tax services to individuals and businesses.
Named for a River
A pebble’ s throw from Poca Valley Headquarters office in Walton, WV runs the Pocatalico River. The Pocatalico River originates in Roane County and twists and turns throughout Roane, Kanawha, and Putnam Counties. In 1908, the Pocatalico River was a viable means of travel for commerce as paved roads and automobiles were luxuries. Poca Valley Bank, whose name bears a likeness to the river, opened its doors in 1908 to reinforce the livelihood of its inhabitants along the rolling landscape of Roane County. The bank remains headquartered in Walton today.
