The West Virginia University ( WVU ) Lane Innovation Hub , located on WVU ’ s Evansdale campus , provides manufacturers with the tools , expertise and insight to help navigate some of today ’ s most challenging manufacturing problems . The Lane Innovation Hub works in partnership with WVU Industrial Extension to help West Virginia manufacturers reach their full potential by providing the insight and education they need to stay profitable in global markets . WVU Industrial Extension is West Virginia ’ s official representative of the National Institute of Standards and Technology / Manufacturing Extension Partnership ’ s national network , a unique publicprivate partnership that delivers comprehensive , proven solutions to U . S . manufacturers , fueling growth and advancing West Virginia manufacturing .
Manufacturers across the Mountain State have access to the Lane Innovation Hub ’ s state-of-the-art equipment . The collection of design , machining , building and fabrication spaces found at the Hub provide many opportunities that would typically be out of reach for start-up , small and medium-sized manufacturers , contributing to the overall success of the local and state economy .
“ While the main focus of the Lane Innovation Hub remains manufacturing prototypes or small production runs for WVU students and faculty , we also are here to service individuals and companies across the state ,” says Dustin Spayde , director of the Lane Innovation Hub .
As the first fully staffed prototyping center on WVU ’ s campus , the nearly 9,500-square-foot space is comprised of three main workshops dedicated to advanced manufacturing , rapid prototyping and electronic prototyping , with an additional lab area for metal additive manufacturing . Recently , the Lane Innovation Hub has expanded its capabilities and capacity with the following additions :
• High-resolution stainless-steel metal 3D printing
• Larger format SLA resin 3D printing
• Additional CNC milling to expand capacity
• Aluminum anodizing for small to medium sized parts
• More powerful lasers for expanding cutting and engraving options for metals
The Lane Innovation Hub ’ s capabilities include CNC machining , waterjet cutting , 3D scanning / coordinate measuring , wire EDM cutting , laser engraving / cutting , CNC routing , aluminum anodizing , welding , sheet metal forming , printed circuit board prototyping , vacuum forming and a wide variety of 3D printing options .
