Advocating for Appalachians

From humble roots planted firmly in the coal industry to ushering in a new era aimed at generational energy independence — West Virginia has diversified , to say the least . Being nimble to both cultural and social trends of the times has afforded the Mountain State a future that is brighter than ever . One shining example of where West Virginians have rolled up their sleeves to look at future growth potential can be found right in downtown Huntington . Aptly named , Coalfield Development Corporation calls Huntington home and has worked tirelessly since 2010 to do its part to rebuild Appalachia .
Having garnered the attention of everyone from former Intuit CEO and current president of Marshall University , Brad D . Smith , to U . S . President Joe Biden himself — their mission to inspire growth , development and the belief that our greatest resource as a state is native West Virginians has not gone unnoticed . Since their inception , Coalfield Development Corporation has been the catalyst for transformational projects all across southern West
Virginia . Two hundred and fifty jobs have been created , over 1,200 individuals have received specialized job training and more than $ 20 million has been leveraged in new investment to the region — undeniably inspiring .
The team at Thrasher recognized back in 2020 just how inspiring Coalfield Development Corporation really was . Harnessing a true vision for what it could become with the right team in place , enter the redevelopment of the former Black Diamond site in the heart of Huntington , which had become a brownfield . “ Brownfield ” is a term often used to describe abandoned swaths of land left in the wake of former industrial and manufacturing sites . This moniker has become a real buzz word in the engineering industry — especially throughout Appalachia . Often requiring layers of red tape to be crossed with regulatory and funding agencies , the redevelopment of these parcels can be quite the challenge .
Challenge or not , this site was truly a diamond in the rough . Through the hard work of the team at Coalfield
and Thrasher on board as the engineer , the site was remediated and ultimately awarded over $ 7.5 million through the aggressive pursuit of the U . S . EPA ’ s Build Back Better Regional Challenge . Coalfield in partnership with Solar Holler , is now actively working to transform the remediated site into a new “ Mine the Sun ” Solar Training and Logistics Center .
A firm native of the Mountain State , the opportunity to play a significant role in bringing new life to these oftenforgotten properties is a mission that we stand behind . Whether it ’ s environmental investigation and permitting or site readiness plans — Thrasher ’ s Got It .
