With only eight consultants , West Virginia University ’ s Industrial Extension ( WVUIE ) traveled just over 74,000 miles in 2021 to work with small and medium-sized manufacturers to improve their operations . It is the mission of WVUIE to help West Virginia manufacturers reach their full potential by providing the insight and education they need to stay profitable in global markets , expand and grow their business and retain local talent to strengthen the state ’ s economy .
WVUIE functions as a unit of the Mining and Industrial Extension Service within the WVU Benjamin M . Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources with a central office located at the university in Morgantown . In addition to representing WVU , the Industrial Extension holds a cooperative agreement with the Federal Department of Commerce , National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership ( MEP ) to represent West Virginia at the federal level .
WVUIE is one of 51 centers nationwide fulfilling the mission to sustain , grow and build a stronger manufacturing community . In recent years , this effort has proven to be more important than ever . Working collaboratively with
other states , they connect suppliers and manufacturers , benchmark and share lessons learned and support one another across state lines when needed . Strong bonds exist within the state , including partnerships with the West Virginia Department of Economic Development , the Small Business Development Centers and career and technology educators .
The project managers and leadership team provide years of hands-on experience in the manufacturing industry and proven success in their fields . They continue to stay on top of the latest technologies , best practices and certification requirements . Their assistance allows small manufacturers to tap into an extremely high level of expertise and partner with a team who is genuinely invested in their success . The staff includes experts in occupational health , safety regulatory compliance , risk mitigation , continuous improvement and lean manufacturing techniques , ISO 9001 and related management systems , problem solving , strategic planning , marketing and workforce and leadership development .
