On March 16 , 2020 , Governor Jim Justice declared a state of emergency in West Virginia due to the spread of the novel coronavirus . Since then , residents of the Mountain State have been navigating how to survive , maintain and thrive in the midst of a highly contagious virus , school and business closings , a statewide stay-at-home order and mandated limits on public gatherings . Despite the challenges and hardships , West Virginians did what they always do — banded together to provide support in the form of equipment , food , money , care and more . This infographic illustrates just some of the ways Mountain State businesses , organizations and nonprofits proved that we ’ re all in this together .

HAND SANITIZER

At full production , Dow Inc . facilities in Belgium , Brazil , Germany , Michigan and West Virginia combined were able to produce

440,000 pounds

of hand sanitizer , which is the equivalent of 880,000 8-ounce bottles .
The Mid-Atlantic Technology , Research & Innovation Center pivoted to manufacturing hand sanitizer . The company ’ s initial batch filled more than

17,000 8-ounce bottles .

West Virginia distillery Smooth Ambler Spirits committed to making

19,000 750-milliliter bottles

of hand sanitizer , which were shipped to some of the hardest-hit areas in the country .
