From Bolingbroke to Culloden

Juliette The town of Juliette was named for Juliette McCracken, the daughter of the engineer who built the railroad near the town, which was originally known as Glover in the late 1800s. The first Juliette school was built around 1900, but the building unfortunately burned in 1907. The building was eventually rebuilt and still stands today. Joe Smith built a cotton mill and Juliette Milling Company Gristmill, the first major industry in Juliette. Around 1900, the two businesses were purchased by the Glover family and consolidated under one name, Juliette Milling Co. The first bridge built across the Ocmulgee River, which is located next to Juliette, was built in 1907. Though much of the industry
has since left Juliette, the downtown area returned to prominence when the 1991 movie Fried Green Tomatoes filmed in Juliette. The movie’ s chief landmark, the Whistle Stop Cafe, was recreated in Juliette by locals. The restaurant remains popular today.
High Falls In the early 1800s, High Falls was a prosperous industrial town with several stores, a grist mill, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a shoe factory, and even a hotel. However, when a major railroad bypassed in 1880s, the formerly bustling spot became a near ghost town. High Falls State Park remains near where the town used to be. Visitors to the park can hike to the remaining grist mill foundation
and enjoy a scenic waterfall on the Towaliga River. A campground, picnic areas, and a canoe rental are also available. The park contains a 650 acre lake that is popular for fishing.
Bolingbroke Bolingbroke is best-known for its location right at the merger of I-75 and I-475 in southern Monroe County. The town has also become famous, however, for several popular antique shops. The town, which does not have a traffic light, has several gas stations, a popular restaurant, The Red Tomato, a popular tea room, Twila Faye’ s, a bank, a post office, and a fire station. The community continues to grow as many Macon residents flock to south Monroe.
Culloden Culloden, located in west Monroe County, is the oldest town in the county. It was first settled in the late 1700s by William Culloden, a Scotsman. Culloden has long been known for its farming, but in recent years, the town has rediscoved its Scottish roots. The town played host for about a decade to the Culloden Highland Games, a Scottish athletic competition. Culloden is also known for being the site of a Civil War battle in April 1865, when the home militia challenged two regiments of Federal mounted infantry shortly before the surrender of the Confederacy.
