President Michaelia Gilbert was enthusiastic to talk about the organization . “ We advertise our meetings in the paper , and we are always looking for new members , especially younger people . In addition to our speakers and regular meetings , we sometimes incorporate field trips . I feel it is beneficial to collaborate with other historical societies . All four groups feature guest speakers at their programs . Some are members , and others are from outside organizations . Though many of their events are open to the public , they always welcome new members .
There are also some other organizations who work in conjunction with the historical groups in the Clark and Floyd counties . Nancy Hemphill of the Clark County Cemetery Commission had the following to say about that organization . “ Few people know what we do or the need to care for the 166 pioneer and abandoned cemeteries in our county . We work with groups who volunteer , especially the Boy Scouts and the Young Marines . We want to educate the public about the importance of caring for those beautiful places : clearing areas , cleaning and straightening stones , and placing signs to bring attention to long-forgotten resting places .”
“ As the second oldest county in the state , we have a long history which we need to preserve . The commission works closely with the township trustees who oversee the mowing of many of those cemeteries and the Clark County Commissioners who have taken a great deal of interest in our work .” For those who would like to learn more about the Clark County Cemetery Commission , please visit their Facebook page at : https :// www . facebook . com / profile . php ? id = 100064916940989 .
Whether or not history is one ’ s main area of interest , historical groups and preservation societies contribute much to their communities , and the individuals involved with the organizations deserve recognition for all their dedicated work .
