The Low Sacrifice‘ Diet’ 67 Not so sexy, but that is my‘ after’ shot. In dietary terms, the Low Sacrifice‘ Diet’ reduces the overall energy intake by removing the energy dense, low sacrifice foods altogether and by decreasing the amount, the portion size, of the energy dense, high sacrifice foods. Exactly how we do this we will discuss in the next chapter. Finally, we increase the amount of healthy foods that are less energy dense. The foods that most people need to increase in this box are lean protein( lean meats and lower fat dairy), salads, vegetables and the less energy rich carbohydrates. Get this right and you cannot help but lose weight. The role of weight loss drugs This book is all about making weight loss as easy as it can be from a psychological perspective. Even then, many people, particularly the seriously obese and those with medical complications, need all the help they can get. For this group, medications can be a useful addition to a weight-loss plan. Note here the word‘ addition’. There is no point taking them unless they are just one part of a low sacrifice approach. The weight loss medications variably available( depending on which country you are in) are( some, not all, trade names in brackets):
• Rimonabant( Acomplia)
• Sibutramine( Reductil)
• Phentermine( Duromine)
• Diethylproprion( Tenuate Dospan)
• Orlistat( Xenical)
• Fluoxetine( Prozac, Lovan) Rimonabant is the new kid on the block and has an interesting development history. It comes from the too well known problem of marijuana stimulating appetite or causing‘ the munchies’. By blocking the brain receptors that cannabis works on, this drug has the opposite effect i. e. it decreases food cravings. In research published in late 2007 in the respected British Medical Journal, Rimonabant caused weight loss of 4.7 kilograms, compared to Sibutramine at 4.2 kilograms and Orlistat at only 2.9 kilograms.
