Using GL to sort the good, the bad and the suicidal 141 all need know exactly where our leaks are. Adding what you now know about GL to what you probably already know about fat you should be able to work it out. If you have a friend who has read this book share your EAD with them for their objective input. The most common times that I find that the extra calories sneak in are around afternoon tea time and then in mini-binges that occur after every few days of being good. Mini-binges, like eating a family block of chocolate or having half a dozen slices of white bread, are small enough to be‘ forgotten’ by your average human mind.‘ Mini-bingeing’, while otherwise eating like a saint is the time-honored way to get the calories. Before Tom, as we will call him, did his EAD he swore that he was one of those guys with‘ slow metabolism’ because he ate his carefully calorie controlled meals every day and his weight, if anything, was going up. His knowledge of calorie counting was scary. As he rattled off each food he ate in a day, he could tell me how many calories each had and what his totals were for each meal and the Grand Total for each day. But when he did his EAD every few days we found a hamburger with fries here and a family block of chocolate there – just enough to keep in him in weight-gain territory. The rest of the time, he ate a text book low calorie diet( which was the beginning of the problem). When I asked Tom to start having some chocolate( a HSF for him) for morning tea he came back and admitted that he hadn’ t done it.‘ It just doesn’ t feel right and I couldn’ t bring myself to do it’, Tom said. After years of being forbidden chocolate, even eating it under a doctor’ s prescription just did not compute in his mind. So we started with a single chocolate frog. Only after he could bring himself to break this‘ rule’ and starting eating his HSF was he finally able to stop his mini-binges. So be aware of our tendency to lie to ourselves and to those around us by forgetting. Lying to ourselves is an important sign that we must learn to recognize because it is the giveaway sign of self-sabotage – which we now need to look at in more detail.
