Using GL to sort the good, the bad and the suicidal 135 So if any of the people who share your fridge with you purport to love you, then explain to them that one way they can show their love for you will be to support you in these tasks. They can do this by taking the time to understand these principles and to, at the very least, not work in cahoots with the fridge and pantry and supply them with bad foods. As we discussed at the end of the last chapter impulse buying is the next problem. I think that fridges and pantries are closely related to check-out aisles laden with impulse buys. If they are not related they certainly have a close working relationship! My advice with check-out aisles is, don’ t let them seduce you. Recognize that they are not the innocuous pieces of cabinetry that they appear; they are deadly killers hunting you with their calorie rich snack foods! Okay maybe I’ m going a bit too far, but hopefully you get the point. Portion size still matters For those of you who buy meals out a lot( maybe the bachelors amongst you) as I mentioned earlier, spend some time looking at what you can buy when you are out in the way of complete meals with a low GL. My standard fast food meals are roast chicken( with the skin because that’ s the best bit) and salad, Mexican food with corn chips or tortillas, an apple muffin or even a thin crust pizza – provided I can limit myself to only two pieces. Remember, pizza is relatively high in fat so you must either order a lower fat version, like vegetarian, or limit your intake. It does not matter how low GL the carb component is or how low the fat content is if you still eat larger portions of these foods – you will not lose weight. Remember the lessons of savoring and mindfulness in Chapter 8 to help you keep your portion size down. Do not under any circumstances eat pizza with sugared soft drink. This is a classic‘ suicide meal’ rich in fat and sugar. You could not do worse. Have the pizza with red wine, a diet soft drink, or better still, water.
