Carbohydrate: the ultimate hunter 112 to access our unconscious thoughts and beliefs through simply‘ thinking about it’. It is when we look back on our behavior in an embarrassing situation and think,‘ My God, why did I say / do that?’ that we begin to realize that there is a part of us running the show with whom we are not well acquainted. Why was Freud dismissed by mainstream thinking? Why isn’ t what he taught us, taught in schools? There are a number of views on this and exploring them fully is too far off the subject of this book but these are my views in brief. At the outset I should say that Freud, a doctor, and the world’ s first psychotherapist19 was not dismissed within his own medical specialty of psychiatry. While he had many detractors, his revolutionary views found many adherents who recognized that his ideas explained aspects of human behavior and psychological problems that had been previously inexplicable. Today there are two main schools of psychotherapy in the world: Cognitive Behavior Theory( CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy. Psychodynamic Therapy evolved from Freudian Theory. While they have more in common than differences, CBT focuses on managing conscious thinking and behavior while Psychodynamic Theory’ s focus is on emotional learning during our formative years. 20 Both schools have 19 Psychiatrists can be broadly separated into those who treat such mental illnesses as, bipolar disorder & schizophrenia – primarily with medications – and psychotherapists, like myself, who treat conditions such as chronic depression, trauma & relationship problems – primarily with non-drug methods. 20 Unlike Freud, I see our formative years as extending into our late teens and our early twenties, although, with each year, especially after teenagehood sets in, the power of influence decreases significantly. Very recent brain imaging research is suggesting that at an anatomical level the brain does not mature at a physical level until our early 20’ s.
