Equally politely, I had to point out that psychotherapy might be a little more sophisticated than he imagined it to be. I believe that marketing strategies( which of course include public relations strategies used by governments as well as large corporations) and psychotherapy are the two most powerful and misunderstood forces in the 21st century. While these powerful organizations embrace Freud’ s understanding of what really controls people, most people dismiss Freudian theory completely unaware that, in doing so, like me with smoking, they are handing their heads to these companies on the proverbial platter. Freudian theory, or psychodynamic theory is not an option. It is not something you can dismiss as irrelevant to you. It describes and delineates the way our emotional world works and controls us. If you do not understand this then you are more easily controlled by those who do – it is that simple. So what does Freudian theory say? In essence it says we are controlled by our emotions rather than our rational thoughts. But more importantly, these emotions control us through our unconscious mind without our awareness. While thoughts are the language of the conscious mind, emotions are the language of the unconscious mind. To influence the unconscious mind, the far mightier of the two, we need to understand its language. While the unconscious mind had been described before Freud, he was the first to look closely at how it worked and then apply this to helping people with psychological problems. He recognized that no matter how much we might want to know what is in our unconscious mind, we cannot access this information without special techniques such as hypnosis, free association or dream analysis. Most people think that their‘ deeper’ thoughts are their unconscious thoughts. They don’ t realize that by definition we are completely unable
