DESCRIPTION
Dutchman ’ s pipe is a fast growing vine that can reach 3 metres high .
Leaves are up to 75 millimetres long , glossy green and heart shaped , growing closely to form a dense mat of foliage .
Stems are woody , slender and twine tightly in coils around any supporting structure .
Flowers the name arose from its ’ flowers which are shaped like a traditional Dutchman ’ s pipe . These flowers are strikingly coloured reddishpurple and marked with white and yellow .
Habitat it is popular in gardens and suburban backyards and prefers moist , fertile soils .
Weed characteristics it is a prime invader of rainforests . It resembles the natural food plants of butterflies but poisons the larvae when they begin to feed . It threatens the survival of the rare birdwing butterfly .
Dispersal produces large amounts of seeds that fall and spread .

Restricted . This species is Category 3 Restricted matter under Queensland Legislation .
HOW TO ACT
Physical removal of all plant parts can be effective . Cut stump or foliar spraying with glyphosphate can also provide good control . Follow up monitoring and control is recommended as often requires a second application for complete control and can regrow vegetatively .
