CATS CLAW CREEPER

DESCRIPTION
This is a perennial , woody vine which is an aggressive climber . It has an extensive root system with underground tubers .
Leaves each have 2 leaflets with a 3 clawed tendril ( the cat ’ s claw ) growing between them . They are dark green and are arranged opposite each other on the stem .
Flowers are bright yellow , bell shaped and approximately 3 centimetres wide . It flowers during spring and summer .
Seeds are contained within very long , narrow and flat pods on the vine . The seed pods are flat and are 1 centimetre wide and up to 30 centimetres long .
Habitat along creek systems and neglected areas and is mainly found in coastal regions .
Weed characteristics has the ability to completely smother native vegetation , growing up over trees .
Dispersal seeds are water dispersed , allowing the vine to spread along water courses .
BIOSECURITY MATTER
This species is not listed under Queensland Legislation however it may be listed under local government law and control is highly recommended . This species is also listed a Weed of National Significance ( WONS )
HOW TO ACT
Foliar spraying with a broad leaf herbicide and mechanical removal are recommended . Basal barking the stems can also be effective .
