WHAT IS INVASIVE BIOSECURITY MATTER ?
Pest plants targeted for control under state legislation are species that have , or could have , serious economic , environmental or social impacts . Weed classification can be confusing . At a national level , the Australian Government has listed 32 Weeds of National Significance ( WONS ), and allocates priority funding for their control . In Queensland , the Biosecurity Act 2014 has replaced the Land Protection ( Pest and Stock Route Management ) Act 2002 , and introduced a new category system for managing our shared responsibility towards pest management .
The Biosecurity Act 2014 provides a consistent , modern , risk-based and less prescriptive approach to biosecurity in Queensland . It has moved away from a declared class system with prohibited matter , and introduced categories for restricted matter . Prohibited and restricted matter is referred to as invasive biosecurity matter , which consists of invasive plants and animals that are listed under this legislation . In this updated version of Weed Free we have provided information on this new Act and how it affects you .
PROHIBITED BIOSECURITY MATTER may be a disease , exotic fish , insect pest , pest animal or a weed that is not found in Queensland . If it was to enter Queensland it would significantly impact our health , way of life , the economy and the environment .
