YOU AND YOUR BORDER COLLIE Sue Kinchin
Who is this book for ? - if you already own , or are thinking of owning a Border Collie , or maybe a Border Collie Cross , it ' s for you to find out how to have the best possible relationship with your dog . Anyone who has successfully owned a Border Collie will tell you what special dogs they are . They will tell you they are intelligent , sensitive , biddable and very quick to learn . From this description they sound like the perfect pet and with our help they can be . However , when we take one of these very special and complex dogs into our home we have a responsibility to try to understand all the factors that make a Border Collie what it is and we must be prepared to adapt our expectations if necessary .
Border Collies have been bred for many generations in a very specific and restricted environment for a very specific task and as a breed are relative newcomers to life as pets . Some do very well and others struggle . It is our duty to try to understand these beautiful and clever creatures and to help them to cope . The better we understand our Collies the less likely it is that we and our collie will encounter serious problems .
Sue Kinchin , the author of " You And Your Border Collie " was also the author of “ So What is Your Border Collie Not Good At ?” an article that has been welcomed by Border Collie owners , enthusiasts and rescuers worldwide . Requests to reproduce , and where needed translate , the article have come from trainers , behaviourists , owners , rescue organisations and enthusiast ’ s magazines in the UK , USA , Spain , South Africa and the Netherlands . It has been on our website for many years and still attracts new viewers on a very regular basis .
Sue has owned Border Collies for 40 years and has a particular interest in building happy , harmonious relationships between pet owners and their smart , sensitive Collies .
Since her first experience of training a dog in 1962 she has seen many changes and advances in the understanding of Canine Behaviour and has followed the improvement in dog training that has , thankfully , left behind training by coercion and punishment in favour of using the more efficient , humane , scientific principle of learning through positive reinforcement . In addition to her academic study of Canine Behaviour she has been fortunate to attend seminars led by some of the most internationally respected positive reinforcement behaviourists and trainers . Her practical experience includes working in a boarding kennels , exercising and training dogs for a breeder of German Shepherd Dogs , administering and teaching Pet Dog Training Classes , carrying out Behaviour Modification Consultations on personal recommendation and vet referral , running advice and support evenings for groups of Border Collie owners , presenting a staff education session on Border Collies at a large mixed rescue centre , recruiting and training display teams for training demonstrations . She is often consulted by fellow trainers and behaviourists for advice regarding Border Collies .
Having completed the book , Sue very generously donated the copyright and all profits to Border Collie Trust and so every sale helps collies in need .
