Weapon System Officer
Weapons System Officer is part of the Aircrew Profession within the RAF which also includes Pilot, Pilot( ISR) RPAS and Weapons Systems Operator( WSOp).
Professions in the RAF are distinct areas of defence expertise where common skills and attributes are required to deliver on demand. Service Personnel may be employed in any of the specialisations within their Profession depending upon the Service need, but will take into account the aptitude, qualifications and career aspirations of our personnel.
As a Royal Air Force front-line Weapons Systems Officer( WSO) you might fly the E-7 Wedgetail, P-8A Poseidon, RC-135W Rivet Joint, or Protector RG1.
The roles of our WSOs are as varied as our aircraft with the field of Intelligence, Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance( ISTAR) offering the most opportunities.
Whatever you end up flying you will be posted to an aircraft type and role according to operational requirements and your ability. You would then specialise on that aircraft type for the initial part of your career.
