WEAPON SYSTEMS OFFICER( WSO)
WSO( pronounced“ wizzo”) is a specialisation of the Aircrew Profession alongside that of Pilot and Weapon Systems Operator( WSOp,“ wizzop”). Each type of Aircrew bring specific skills to deliver Air Power from their aircraft and are at the leading edge of the RAF’ s main output.
The Aircrew Profession is one of 12 Professions in the wider RAF that group common skills, training and attributes. As one of 3 Specialisations in the Aircrew Profession, WSO has 3 sub-specialisations within which you will be selected against your aptitude, performance and career aspirations.
As a Royal Air Force front-line WSO you might fly the E-7 Wedgetail, P-8A Poseidon, RC-135W Rivet Joint or the MQ-9B Protector RG1 Remotely Piloted Air System( RPAS) delivering Royal Air Force capability around the world.
The roles for WSOs are as varied as the aircraft; in the training role, they also
fly Phenom and Avenger, plus in the public display role the Lancaster and
Dakota.
