OUR FIRST ETS RIDE

By Eric Peek

My wife and I live with our horses on a small farm in Shelby County, KY just east of Louisville. We have two Rocky Mountain Horses, a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse and a miniature donkey we bought as a companion animal. We both enjoy trail riding and training with obstacles. I recently joined an endurance riding team and I am training for my first endurance race. My wife, Jena, started mounted archery on her horse and has been practicing at home. We just purchased our first Amish made surrey and will be training a couple of our horses to drive in the near future.

My first real horseback ride was while stationed in Keflavik, Iceland while in the United States Marine Corp. After getting out of the military, my wife and I met online on an American Online (AOL) horse chat room. In 2011 we bought our farm and together, began horseback riding again.

We Found ETS on Facebook

We found ETS on Facebook and watched for events close by that worked with our schedule. We found their Taylorsville Lake State Park, KY event on Facebook and signed up immediately. We’ve done multiple obstacle course type horse training clinics in the past and we love that type of training. We have really focused on trail riding over the last couple years and thought this would be the perfect time and motivation to get back into obstacle course type training.

The thing I most liked about the event was that everyone was there to help each other. Even though we were all competing against each other everyone was ready to assist when needed and it was really about completing the obstacles successfully and not about winning or losing.

My wife's only goal for the ETS event was to beat me. Which she did.
