Virtual Obstacle Shows

A note from our judges:

What is the difference between an "8" stop and a "10" stop? I am asked often why someone, who had a perfectly good stop, didn't have a perfect score. In the VOS scoring system, a 5 denotes an average performance, with the score going up for greatness and down for mistakes. We are casual and all about the learning experience at VOS, so we tend to score up unless there was an issue. That said, a perfect 10 is reserved for that really "extra" maneuver.

In the case of a Stop obstacle, we look for the horse to have stopped straight, preferably square, with all 4 feet lined up nicely. We want

the horse to stop when asked and on a light cue. That means that if your horse stopped straight, but you slowed from a lope to a jog to a walk to a stop, all on a light rein, you will likely score well, in the 6-7 range. If you had to really pick your horse up to stop them, but they went from a lope to a stop in a stride, you may be there too, maybe even an 8. To get that 10 though, we want a stop on a light rein, from the gait requested to the stop in the stride it was asked for, straight, square and solid. If the horse nails the stop and doesn't move a step after, you've got yourself a 10!

Never feel bad about your 7 or 8 score. That means you did something well enough that the judge recognized that. It also means that you have room to improve and learn new things with your horse.

Do you love to spend time with your horse? Are you getting bored with your daily routine and looking to mix it up? Feeling like you don't know what to do next in your daily training? Well Virtual Obstacle Shows was designed for you! If you are wondering what it is all about, head over to our facebook page or website.

Our members are thrilled with the patterns sent to them for each show. The level of challenge is chosen by the competitor when they enter. We have divisions for every horseman from beginner to advanced. Just getting in to showing and want to know how to get started? Head on over to our website to join as a member and enter your first show. Take some time before the show to review our obstacles and rules. Choose a couple of obstacles to practice. Go back and watch previous videos and set up a mini course to try out at home.

On the first day of the show, you will be sent a pattern and instructions. Then you have 7 days to set up the pattern in your own yard, pasture or arena. Practice a little, but don't overdo it and stress yourself or your horse out, this is FUN! Find a victim or willing participant to help video your ride when you are ready. Upload your video and send it back for a score.

Did someone say prizes? Yes we did! Just look at the jackets given to members when they reach the 50 point mark! And the prizes given for the shows are great too. We recognize the effort our competitors put in and reward it at every opportunity.

We would love to have you join us for our next ride and yours. No experience necessary.
