Resources and ensuring the right organizational structure and related procedures were in place. In early 2013, he agreed to serve as President of the Board, not knowing that a few months later, the Club would begin a period of change that would test anyone in Michael’ s role.
While the role of President is to serve as an advisor to the CEO, the Club had a two-year period where the CEO position was in transition and he had no CEO to advise. Rather than leaving the daily operations of the Club to the remaining staff during those times, Michael actively led the team, while at the same time, leading the search, not just once, but twice, for a new CEO. His tireless efforts eventually led to the hiring of Karen Papazian, our current CEO. Under Karen’ s leadership and her strong partnership with Michael, BGCV is stronger than ever. Our staff has become a stronger team and one focused not only making sure the day-to-day operations run smoothly, but also one working on strategic initiatives and the long-term well-being of the Club and its kids. The staff also view Michael as a mentor and one who has helped them grow individually.
Michael is a champion of our Club’ s youth, as well as young people across the Westside community. He is involved in several other philanthropic activities, such as The Sports Spectacular Diabetes & Obesity Wellness & Research Center at Cedars-Sinai, The Harold Robinson Foundation, and the
Wilshire Boulevard Temple.
In the words of long-time fellow board member, Cathy Hession:“ Michael has been an invaluable Board member for so many years. Michael distinguished himself right away as someone who was willing to step up to whatever task he was asked to do. He continued to be an exemplary leader throughout so many staff and board transitions, and he was always the calm voice of reason. He always took his time and was thoughtful and measured when big decisions needed to be made. He was warm, but firm, and everyone felt we were being led by a wise and caring man. Michael has been a remarkable and steadfast leader and major supporter of BGCV and we are thrilled to finally be honoring him for all he has done!”
On behalf of the boys, girls, staff, and Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Venice and the Westside community, we thank you Michael Moskowitz for all your leadership and contributions!
