THE DISNEY TREASURE

Small Details on a Big Ship

Story BY TIMOTHY MOORE | photos by abby richardson

There ’ s no missing the Disney Treasure when it ’ s docked at Port Canaveral . The newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet stands 221 feet tall , stretches 1,119 feet long ( that ’ s more than a fifth of a mile ), and weighs approximately 144,000 tons . The Triton-class ship ferries 4,000 passengers and 1,555 crew members across the Caribbean at a cruising speed of 19.5 knots throughout seven nights . Its Grand Hall spans three deck levels and is centered by a massive chandelier .

But it ’ s the smallest details aboard this vessel that make the sailing experience magical . That chandelier , for instance , is circled by six lanterns . A closer look at each lantern , best seen from Deck 5 , reveals subtle nods to all six current ships in the fleet . For instance , one lantern contains a Mickey shape in its metalwork ( one on every other panel ); you might simply think it ’ s a hidden Mickey — after all , the ship is full of those — but it ’ s actually a nod to Helmsman Mickey , whose statue is in the Grand Hall of the Disney Magic .
Work your way around the chandelier to see the five other lanterns . A shell represents Ariel , whose statue appears on the Disney Wonder ; a Minnie head ( she ’ s got a bow to differentiate her from Mickey ) signifies Minnie from the Disney Fantasy ; Donald ’ s profile appears on a lantern as a nod to his statue on the Disney Dream ; look for Cinderella ’ s glass slipper to represent her statue on the Disney Wish ; and , of course , the magic lamp appears on the final lantern , referencing the Aladdin and Jasmine statue two decks below it in the Treasure ’ s Grand Hall .
Details like these abound on board the Treasure . The casual cruiser might not catch all the details , but these subtle elements , like the design of the carpet or the scarab shapes in the mosaics , add so much depth to your time aboard . Together , they tell a full story and immerse you in the worlds of your favorite characters .
Here are some of my favorite details aboard the ship .
