The Littlest Scene Stealers
While they may not be the easiest to make out from up in the audience ( or at least not without the help of binoculars ), the desks and sets of the productions are filled with endless details and Easter eggs . From mind-blowing costumes and accessories to major set pieces , here are a few of the biggest ( and littlest ) reveals we found backstage :
Big and Small Counterparts Once you get a closer look at what ’ s on each of the animator ’ s desks , you ’ ll notice some familiar features . Many of the bits and bobs on the desks are blown up to giant prop pieces used in the acts , such as the eraser mat and seesaw .
Animated Page Costumes One of the most surprising details we learned during the tour was about these animated page costumes . There are actual performers in each , whose only visibility comes from a small space at their feet . They rely on colored spike tape on the stage to guide them to their designated spots .
Mary Blair As a major Mary Blair fan , it was fascinating to get a closer look at the desk inspired by her legendary work . There ’ s a palette on her desk filled with colors all featured in her original storyboard concepts for Alice in Wonderland .
Miss Hesitation Purse Miss Hesitation ’ s motivation is sowing doubt and , well , hesitation in the main character of Julie . So it ’ s telling that Miss Hesitation accessorizes with a giant eraser handbag , suitably marked with her own branding and villain trademark .
Doubtofskys : Perhaps no moment in the production had me questioning “ Wait , how are they doing that ?” more than the Doubtofskys . One scene brings out an array of puppets who march across the stage carrying waste baskets on their backs . I tried my best to look for strings controlling the puppets on stage to no avail , so I asked how they work during the tour . Turns out the answer is some extremely flexible rhythmic gymnasts , who are contorted inside and walk across the stage .
