Sustainable landscaping offers multiple benefits to homeowners
WRITTEN BY CINDY SCHWEICH HANDLER
Sustainable landscaping , which takes environmental considerations into account , isn ’ t just about doing good for the planet : Aspects of it can be good for homeowners ’ wallets , too . These projects in Kinnelon , provided by CLC Landscape Design in Ringwood , reflect a growing trend .
PERMEABLE PATIOS
Permeable patios prevent storm water runoff , reduce flooding and are aneconomic and attractive alternative to seepage tanks . “ Permeable patios are the same as other patios ,” says Rich Cording Sr ., owner of CLC Landscape Design . “ There are just spaces between ( the pieces ).” Sometimes homeowners use them to cover agravel reservoir so water can collect and percolate into the ground , he says , saving money that might otherwise be spent on aseepage tank .
POLLINATORGARDENS
Landscaping with native plants , which are strong and low-maintenance , isanatural way toensure a lovely garden loved by pollinators , birds and other wildlife – and it is cost-effective . Native plants will flower at the right time and provide nectar and berries perfect for butterflies and bees tosurvive , say experts ; because the soil doesn ’ t need to be changed to suit foreign plants , gardeners won ’ t have to use fertilizer . ■
