Tiny Monitor Detects
Irregular Heart Rhythms
Chilton Launches New
Technology to Treat Stroke
The world’s smallest, FDA-approved implantable heart monitor is now available at Chilton Medical Center. About one-third
the size of an AAA battery, this new technology provides continuous cardiac monitoring to help doctors diagnose and standardize
treatment for irregular heart rhythms that may be related to
unexplained syncope, heart palpitations or atrial fibrillation.
Once implanted, the device automatically records abnormal
heart rhythms and allows patients to mark and store symptoms
using a hand-held device. The results are then transmitted wirelessly to the patient’s physician. Powerful yet discreet, this revolutionary heart monitoring system can be used safely with MRI
imaging when needed and operates effectively for up to three
years.
Chilton Medical Center paramedics can now “beam” a neurologist into an ambulance to examine a patient exhibiting stroke
symptoms. Using a handheld telemedicine device that’s equipped
with broadband access and a pan-tilt-zoom camera, a neurologist
miles away can assess a person well before he or she reaches an
emergency room. Early intervention allows doctors to provide
treatment faster, such as administering t-PA, a clot-busting drug
that can help reverse stroke symptoms.
