TOP DOCTORS Dr. William Matarese and Dr. Tony Wanich WILLIAM MATARESE, M.D. Dr. William Matarese is a top doctor due to his conservative treatment approach and his coordination of care through an in-office physical therapist. The orthopedist explains that he exhausts all treatment options including medication, physical therapy, and injections before resorting to surgery. He notes, “Half of all patients benefit from conservative, non-surgical treatment.” When surgery is necessary, patients can be assured his or her operation is conducted by an exceptionally skilled surgeon. “I do a high volume of total hip and total knee replacements,” Dr. Matarese states, “and I do them well.” At High Mountain Orthopedics, a physical therapist works with patients to prepare for pre-surgery and aids in post-surgery augment recuperation. Dr. Matarese states it’s important to build up muscle prior to surgery, to be familiar with post-surgery exercise protocols, and to learn to use crutches or a walker. Another advantage of in-house physical therapy is the coordination of care for non-surgical and surgical patients. “This allows for hands-on interaction between patient, doctor and physical therapist,” says Dr. Matarese. “Any concerns are addressed immediately.” Dr. Matarese and his staff – an orthopedic surgeon, physician’s assistant, physical therapist, and certified radiological technologist – specialize in sports medicine, total joint replacements, shoulder surgery and general orthopedics. Conditions treated include sprains and strains, fractures, ACL tears, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff tears, among others. He is one of several in the area to use platelet rich plasma injections, using a patient’s own blood, to treat damaged tendons and ligaments. “I am very selective in choosing patients who will benefit.” The injections boost the body’s ability to accelerate new tissue growth within tendons and ligaments to repair damage and relieve symptoms. 46 WAYNE MAGAZINE FALL 2015 Dr. Matarese is an assistant clinical instructor at High Mountain Orthopedics Seton Hall, which 342 Hamburg Turnpike, Suite 205 is affiliated with Wayne the orthopedic residency pro(973) 595-7779 gram at St. www.highmountainorthopedics.com Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.
