LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT POMPTON PLAINS
POMPTON PLAINS is many things — the location of Chilton Medical Center, conveniently
located between Route 23 and I-287, the former home of Lenni Lenape Native Americans — but
one thing it’s not is an independent town. According to Pequannock Township historian Jay
Wanczyk, a failed referendum 100 years ago prevented Pompton Plains from becoming its own
municipality. Instead, it is more or less a (desirable) zip code within the Pequannock Township.

ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL OFFERS DEDICATED GERIATRICS EMERGENCY CARE
The dedicated GERIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT ST. JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY
MEDICAL CENTER in Paterson has become the first accredited Geriatric Emergency Department
in New Jersey, one of just nine such departments in the country. The accreditation comes from
the American College of Emergency Physicians. With visits by seniors aged 65 and older far
outnumbering those of other age groups, St. Joseph’s saw the need for the service, and launched
the Geriatric Emergency Department in 2009. It uses thicker, more comfortable mattresses and
enhanced lighting and noise reduction; a medication reconciliation program allows pharmacists
and toxicologists to review patients who are prescribed five or more medications to identify
potential risks. Patients also receive a personalized phone call within 24-48 hours to follow up on
the visit and answer additional questions.
They grow everything big in Texas, and
that includes the stores of home furnishing
chain AT HOME, which recently opened
its first New Jersey outpost in Wayne, near
Willowbrook Mall. How big is At Home? The
chain’s stores are typically about 110,000
square feet, making them four times the size
of a HomeGoods or Homesense, and six times
as large as a typical Pottery Barn. Though the
Wayne location is smaller, at 82,000 square
feet, the shelves are stacked higher, and can
stock the same amount of merchandise.
According to store director Rob Meurer, the
average customer spends two hours working
her way through the store’s furniture, rugs,
kitchenware, patio and garden equipment and
more. • 77 Willowbrook Blvd., (973) 826-1696,
