Town Talk: NEWS & EVENTS my sophomore and junior year of college interning for the Town of Waxhaw in their Development Service De- partment specifi cally in the Planning and Zoning divi- sion. I came into this internship with goals of learning more about regional planning and local government but also to experience a formal work setting and daily tasks that I can expect to do daily at most jobs. At the start of my internship, I was tasked with estab- lishing a relationship with Habitat for Humanity in Union and Anson County and I worked on the installa- tion of the Rosenwald Plaque in the Eastside Commu- nity. Installing the Rosenwald Plaque required collaboration with various community members. First, I helped the team connect with First Community Church because the original proposed plaque location was in the NC- DOT Right-of-Way of Howie Mine Rd. Town of Waxhaw Employee Recognition Awards The Town of Waxhaw recently held their fi rst Em- ployee Recognition Awards Ceremony. The Employee Awards Recognition Program was created to assist in identifying Town Employees who demonstrated exceptional work performance during the previous twelve months. The well-deserved winners for the year 2016 (awarded in 2017) were Town Clerk Melody Shuler-Professional Development; Events Assistant Amy Merrill-Customer Service; Parks and Facilities Supervisor Billy Sellers-Above and Beyond Award; and Team Award went to Building Inspections – Chief Building Inspector Dan Pruss, Inspectors John Deer, Jenny Hendery, David Sellers, and Permitting Tech Debra Left wich. Town Intern, Daniel Valder Shares His Story My name is Daniel Valder and I am a rising junior at The Univer- sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying Public Policy. I spent the summer of 2017 between We met with church leaders and adjusted our plan to meet the needs of the church and community that have past ties to the school. During the Historic Preserva- tion commission (WHPC) meeting, the plan to place the plaque at the original site of the school instead of Howie Mine Rd was fi nalized. As of now, the pole is be- ing constructed onto the plaque, a sign permit is being fi lled out for the Town’s Right-of-Way, the WHPC and Faith Community Church agreed with the location. Broome St. / Waxhaw, NC 28173 / Monday thru Friday / 8 am to 5 pm I also spent much of the summer updating and reor- ganizing the Waxhaw Development Services website page. Aft er a few weeks of learning the process and purpose of the page, I was able to work on the website myself for the rest of the summer. Working on the web- site allowed me to learn about all the divisions in the Development Service Department and what services they provide to the town. The best opportunities to learn directly about the planning process came when I observed staff meetings, TRC meeting, and meetings with developers. During these meetings I could observe plans and engage in the plan review process. Searching and reading through the Unifi ed Development Ordinance allowed me to learn more about the planning process and the town’s goals for development. Participating in the meetings also gave me a good sense of how to communicate with coworkers, residents, and developers. Having an internship where I had the ability to be involved in community gave me a real sense of how a planners work impacts the community. Overall, my ex- perience was very helpful as I prepare to fi nish college in a few years and begin a career. WAXHAW’S G T Talent HOSTED BY WAXHAW POLICE EXPLORERS Waxhaw’s Got Talent!
