Autumn Treasures Festival
Committee Corner :

Autumn Treasures Festival

( Continued from cover ...)
Friday night will feature a concert similar to our Jammin ’ by the Tracks summer concert series . The featured band is Shelley Ruffin and Soul Revival and one of the band members , Jay Henson , just happens to be a member of the professional BBQ Team Banjoman ’ s BBQ who will be competing in the competition on Saturday . Shelley Ruffin and Soul Revival is an acoustic / soul / blues combo that provides music spanning many genres . The core foundation is based around Shelley Ruffin , an accomplished recording artist , and her smooth soulful sound . Accompanying is her husband Rick Ruffin on bass and Jay Henson on acoustic guitar . Jay has played numerous years on the bluegrass circuit and will bring out the banjo for a few hard driving bluegrass tunes ! And now you know why Jay ’ s team is called Banjoman ’ s BBQ .
Some of the musical acts lined up for Saturday and Sunday of Autumn Treasures include LA Acoustics , Sonic Rewind , Aerial View Band and The Flatland Tourists . LA Acoustics claims its roots in classic rock , folk-rock , and lite country as it spans the decades starting in the 60 ’ s . Sonic Rewind will get you grooving to 70 ’ s and 80 ’ s classic rock , while the Aerial View Band will jam good time rock , blues and R-n-B .
The Flatland Tourists are the Carolinas Music Awards 2015 American Band of the Year and have a special connection to Waxhaw . One evening in 2013 , a local cover band was playing an outdoor show at the water tower in downtown Waxhaw . It may have been serendipity , blind luck , or just a coincidence that guided Billy Bost , Rachel Garcia , Frank Sutton , Joe Williams , and Kevin Winchester to that show . But that evening , all five of them eventually found themselves standing near the water tower , listening to the other band . Something brought them to that specific time and moment in space . They ’ d all known of each other for years from playing in other area projects , but had never worked together . A week later , that changed when the first Flatland Tourists rehearsal took place . It didn ’ t take long before they all knew they ’ d found something special . And the rest is history . Today the Flatland Tourists are a well-sought after band having won the Carolinas Music Awards 2015 American Band of the Year .

Committee Corner :

The Organization Advisory Board
The Waxhaw Board of Commissioners believes that all citizens have the right to participate in making town decisions . By being appointed to advisory Boards & Commissions , citizens are able to help make valuable decisions about and for the Town of Waxhaw . Back in 2016 when the Town revamped their committee structure , the Organization Advisory Board was established putting emphasis on volunteer recruitment .
As a result :
• The BOC developed and approved the new Waxhaw Board and Commission Orientation Manual .
• The Board heading up the implementation of this manual created the Organization Advisory Board ( OAB ) adopted from the Main Street Organization and Advisory Committee ( OAC ) as oversight .
• The objective of the OAB is to provide overall volunteer program observations , advice , coordinating , vetting service to the commitment and professional standards through the volunteer program for Waxhaw Boards and Commissions .
• The OAB continues to recommend updates to the application and resume process for all applicants .
Who We Are :
• OAB is comprised of members with diverse experience and familiar with Waxhaw and the Volunteer Program .
What we Do :
• OAB meets and collaborates with all other Board and Commission Chairs once a quarter to make sure all is running smoothly and achieve a better understanding of the specific needs of each Board and Commission .
• OAB establishes consensus with its members to build / recommend right applicants to the BOC to help establish team partnership with each position filled on each Board and Commission .
Time Commitment :
• OAB meets the second Monday of each month 8:00am -9:30 am at Town Hall .
• This is the chosen time due to the interaction of the Town Clerk ’ s office and they attend the meeting as well to access any needed information on the spot and provide technical and administrative advice .
• OAB Members may have additional homework assignments to complete prior to the next monthly meeting .
• OAB Members are limited to serving up to two consecutive three year terms .
• Review the Town Website for further description of the OAB and all other Boards and committees .
We welcome and encourage applications be submitted for this Board , if you feel you have the time , skills and can make the meetings each month to help this Board continue to build , “ raise the bar ” and strengthen each of the Town ’ s Boards and Commissions to build a stronger Volunteer Program and a better Waxhaw .
All applications and resumes are analyzed for applicable skills required and applicants are vetted and interviewed using the following criteria ;
• Certain Boards and Commissions have residency requirements . OAB confirms all residency requirements ( resident must live within the town of Waxhaw municipality ) working with the Town Clerk ’ s office . Note : Town of Waxhaw is only 1 / 3 of population of the 28173 Zip Code .
• OAB looks for applicants who possess and display positive attitudes toward Waxhaw with their involvement with the Town and Volunteer Program .
• Applicants should be engaged with the Town matters though attending BOC Meetings
• OAB looks for applicants who show leadership qualities , skills , education and fit that are needed to fulfill all the qualifications established and approved by the BOC for each Board and Commission .
