M AYO R ’ S R E CA P : D E C . 1 1 T H B O C M E E T I N G The December Board of Commissioners meeting was held on December 11, 2018. The meeting began with a number of key personnel announcements: • Mattison Miller and Max Hsiang were introduced as our newest employees in the Planning Division. • Alexandra Beesting was announced as Waxhaw’s Interim Planning and Zoning Administrator. • Dan Pruss, from the Building Inspections Division, was presented with his 5 Year Service Award. • Officer Montalvo, Officer Gasser and Detective Ng were recognized by the United Sates Secret Service for their support and assistance with their Childhood Outreach Program. Jill Connelly, GingerSnap Race Director, provided the Board a report on the recently completed 5K race in Waxhaw. She shared that in its 9th year, the 2018 GingerSnap hosted over 2,200 participants and raised $29,000 for Girls on the Run, Union County. The Board received reports and took action on a number of transportation items. These included: • Authorization for the creation of additional parking along Church Street in Downtown Waxhaw; • Received a status report and authorized agreements to address safety and connectivity issues near Tory Path and Helms Road. The collaborative efforts of Waxhaw Development Services Staff, NCDOT Rail and Division 10, Union County, Landeavor LLC, and CSX resulted in interim ($4.65M) and long term ($24M) solutions, funded through NCDOT. Received updates on the following transportation projects: • Kensington near 16: Funding has been awarded by the State, with construction to begin late 2019 / early 2020. • Kensington / Waxhaw Marvin Intersection: Construction to begin in early 2019. • Kensington / Morehouse Drive Turn lane: Construction to begin mid 2019; • Gray Byrum and 16: Stop light and turn lanes construction to begin summer 2019. • Waxhaw Marvin Corridor Study: Completed and to be presented in January. The Parks and Recreation Department updated the Board on the park enhancement projects in progress at Town Creek Park, The Skate Park and at Nesbit Park as all near completion. The Board was also informed that the update to the Waxhaw Park and Recreation Master Plan will be available in January. The Board took action on two Public Safety areas. The Board accepted a grant from the Governor’s Crime Commission for new rifles for our Patrol Officers. The Board also adopted new Town personnel policies to modernize hiring practices in the area of Public Safety. Finally, the Board accepted the recommendation of the Historic Preservation Commission and adopted four façade improvement grants.
