Organisations 238 Sessions 3 339 Participants 133 Countries 15 Themes Water Sewage & Effluent September/October 2018 378 World Water Week stats CAREC is a non-profit international organisation assisting the Central Asian governments, regional and international stakeholders in addressing environmental and sustainability challenges across Central Asia. The organisation was established by the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as the European Union and UNDP in accordance with the decision of the Fourth Pan- European Conference held in 1998 in Aarhus, Denmark. For more than 16 years, the organisation has carried out more than 230 projects for a total of 48 million euros. Thematic areas of work focus on: climate change, water resources, environmental management, public health in the context of the environment, and education for sustainable development. Building on the ongoing cooperation between SIWI and CAREC, anchored in a memorandum of understanding on transboundary water management and water diplomacy, SIWI hosted the first ever regional Central Asia delegation at the 2016 World Water Week. u technology • 33
