CAREC
is
a
non-profit
international
organisation assisting the Central Asian
governments,
regional
and
international
stakeholders in addressing environmental and
sustainability challenges across Central Asia.
The organisation was established by the Republic
of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan,
as well as the European Union and UNDP in
accordance with the decision of the Fourth Pan-
European Conference held in 1998 in Aarhus, Denmark.
For more than 16 years, the organisation has
carried out more than 230 projects for a total of 48
million euros. Thematic areas of work focus on:
climate change, water resources, environmental
management, public health in the context of
the environment, and education for sustainable
development. Building on the ongoing cooperation
between SIWI and CAREC, anchored in a
memorandum of understanding on transboundary
water management and water diplomacy, SIWI
hosted the first ever regional Central Asia delegation
at the 2016 World Water Week. u
