There were three opportunities to secure a spot in the 21 car finale beginning on Friday . Top four drivers from each of the 1st four heats earned the first 16 spots for Saturday ’ s Main event . 32 drivers remained , each having two chances to claim one of the five remaining openings for the finals . Jake Yeoman with Co-Driver Brendon Thompson , piloted the 1977 Race car to a second place finish in qualifying . Jason Scherer took the early lead in the Rubicon Express 76 car , followed by Loren Healy in the 67 ATX car . Scherer and Healy were running 1-2 , Jake Yeoman on their heels in 3rd , in 4th , ( was the youngest driver and Son of 2 Time , King of the Hammers Champ . Shannon Campbell ), Wayland Campbell . He had made his way up from an early 5th place .
In speaking with Brendon Thompson of the 1977 car , “ we were in third with Wayland right behind us when the output shaft on the transmission snapped ending our day at the Races .” Kevin Sacalas and Jason Blanton starting 18th and 20th respectively , worked their way to round out the top five in Saturday ’ s Main event .
