Washington County SPCA Newsletter WINTER 2014 | Page 2

When I weigh my reasons for working long hours at a job that constantly throws new challenges in my direction - with very limited available resources to meet those challenges, I need only remember the stories like the ones on the following page - of pets and their happy families. These are just a few of literally hundreds that I hear. These inspire me to do better - work harder - and with an absolutely rock star staff - find ways to improve on what we do. 16 6 20 State H wy 12 3 Bar tlesvi lle, OK 7400 6 ( 918 ) 3 3 6 -157 7 www.WCSPCA.org MISSION The Washington County SPCA is an open access shelter whose mission is to protect the welfare of the animals we come in contact with, and to promote the humane treatment and well being of these animals. We serve the animal, citizens and communities of Washington County from our location at 16620 State Hwy 123, just north of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The Washington County SPCA is a 501(c)3 private, non-profit organization not affiliated with any other entity. The organization receives no government subsidies or funds from the United Way, ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. I hear it said that our adoption fees ‘more than pay for the pets’ - they don’t. I hear people say that we profit from our City Impound Facility contracts - we don’t. I hear others refer to our shelter as a ‘branch’ of a larger national organization - we are not. The simple fact is that our adoption program and community outreach programs are funded almost entirely through the support of individuals like yourself. We need you! Here are some numbers to help explain where your money goes. Every year we spend over $11,000 on antiparasitics (flea/tick/worm medications). Over $25,000 is spent on spay/neuter surgeries for our adoptable pets. Vaccinations account for over $15,000 a year. That doesn’t include cleaning materials, maintenance, utilities, vehicles, food, and the two big things: Labor and Insurance. We have done our best to cut costs and become as efficient as possible but that isn’t enough. The crazy part of the equation is that if we raise adoption prices, adoptions go down - which in turn increases the time the animals are kept in our care and accordingly, increases our costs. We have simply got to raise more money in order to continue with our open door policy and the policy of holding adoptable animals until they find homes. I am asking each of you reading this to consider pledging a monthly gift. You may use the enclosed envelope to send a donation via mail. A pledge can be easily made through PayPal, our online donation form (www.wcspca.org) or you can simply text DOG to 41444 (you will receive a reply text with a link to an online donation page). Thank you in advance for your support! We couldn’t make it without you!
