WSU Pediatric Residency Welcomes First Cohort of Doctors
Washington State University Elson S . Floyd College of Medicine ’ s new pediatric residency program will welcome its first cohort of doctors this summer . The program — the first of its kind east of the Cascades — is done in partnership with Providence Sacred Heart Children ’ s Hospital .
“ The purpose of the program is to build really good general pediatricians and to improve the care of children in the Inland Northwest ,” said Program Director Christian Rocholl .
Hanford Plant Reaches Another Milestone
Apple Naming Contest Draws 15,000 Entries
The heat-up of the second melter at Hanford ’ s vitrification plant began in March , another milestone in the project to safely dispose of 56 million gallons of radioactive waste .
“ Heating up our second melter is a significant accomplishment — even more so as we are doing it while operating melter one ,” Brian Hartman , project director for Bechtel National , told the Tri-City Herald . The plant will vitrify the radioactive waste in storage tanks into a stable glass form safe for disposal .
A contest to name a new apple developed by Washington State University scientists received more than 15,000 entries . The month-long contest ended in early May .
The apple , known as WA 64 , is a cross between a Honeycrisp and a Pink Lady and has been under development for two decades . The winner of the naming contest will receive a box of the new apples , Cougar Gold Cheese , and other prizes . spring 2024 17
