washington business Passages: Sen. Sid Snyder Sid Snyder, a former legislator with more than 50 years of experience working in the Capitol, died Oct. 14 at the age of 86. Snyder, whose remarkable rise from elevator operator to Secretary of the Senate and, finally, to state senator in 1990, was only part of his story. He was also a successful grocer and businessman, running Sid’s Market in Long Beach for decades and serving as a founding member of the Bank of the Pacific. AWB President Don Brunell said this when Snyder retired in 2002: “His deep abiding love for our state, the Legislature, and the legislative process permeated everything he did. While legislative battles were sometimes heated and passionate, Sid had a way of calming people down, restoring a sense of humor, and moving on to other important issues.” In 2010, Snyder received AWB’s C. David Gordon Award for his service to the state.
