Town of Montgomery portion of Walden to Wallkill trail suffers from neglect By LAURA FITZGERALD [email protected] Despite a lease agreement placing responsibility on the Town of Montgomery, no one was quite sure until now who is responsible for maintaining the Rail Trail that connects Walden and Wallkill. Walden Mayor Susan Rumbold asked the Montgomery Town Board in a meeting on Sept. 6 which department is responsible for maintaining the rail trail. The board was Smokehouse presents revised plans for expansion unable to answer until town supervisor Rodney Winchell said he was working on the problem. There are hanging branches from the storms that ripped through the area in May that need to be cleared on the trail. “People are worried about insurance, about other things,” Rumbold said. “I’m worried that someone will get hit with a falling tree branch or something and people may be in jeopardy.” The pavement on Montgomery’s side was never sealed, Rumbold said. “A lot of time and a lot of effort went into this and we’re not taking care of it,” Rumbold said. Rumbold said that while the trail is usable, she would like it to be maintained and a plan to be developed for its maintenance before it deteriorates. “The village is willing to do whatever we can to help to maintain it, but it’s being neglected and it’s a shame and I’m embarrassed about it,” Rumbold said. Currently, tractor trailers primarily use the entrance on Myers and Hoagerburgh Roads. The addition, which connects two buildings and a concrete slab, will allow for the expansion of the business’ current operation—processing, smoking Continued on page 4 By RACHEL COLEMAN Photo provided Police Officer Bobby Turners greets students at Pine Bush Elementary School last Wednesday on their first day of class. The financial health of the village was the top concern at the Montgomery Village Board meeting last week, where conversations at times became heated. “Since I’ve been here, there’s been no audit of our books,” said Village Treasurer Dave Griffith, recommending that the village have an annual outside audit of its financials. Mayor Stephen Brescia noted that until a couple years ago, the village had a full audit done every other year and a partial one done on the off years. He agreed that the village needed to return to that pattern. The board plans to get RFPs for a firm that can conduct the audit.
