Frontier to challenge Time Warner in Montgomery
By JESSICA COHEN jcohen @ tcnewspapers . com
A challenge to Time Warner ’ s cable service revenues in the Village of Montgomery may soon arise from Frontier Communications . Two Frontier representatives , Susan McDermott , network engineering manager ; and Terry Flood , business account specialist , attended the September 6 village board meeting and introduced their services . A public hearing for Frontier ’ s application will be held on October 4 at 7:15 p . m . at the Village Hall .
As described by McDermott , many of Frontier ’ s services resemble the offerings of Time Warner , which recently merged with Charter Communications . But several Frontier features are not offered by TWC , according to Andrew Russell , TWC director of communications .
Frontier offers ultra-high definition television and the ability to view six screens on one , options TWC does not provide , Russell said . McDermott also said wi-fi enabled set top boxes allow televisions to be moved anywhere in the Frontier subscriber ’ s house , a flexibility not available from TWC .
“ All digital converter boxes need a connection to our hybrid fiber-coax network , so as long as we can run a cable to that area of the home , customers can access our services ,” said Russell , of TWC .
Walden orders troubled house vacated
Continued from page 1 floors in the house “ were observed to be sagging and floor tiles are loose and shifting .” Those infractions were in addition to the 28 previous code violations that were found at the home regarding the sanitary condition of the property .
Glen Ramcharitar , the home ’ s landlord , appeared at the meeting last Tuesday and said he was willing to comply with the village ’ s directive . “ The issue is the safety of the tenants and for the building itself ,” he told the board . “ I was not in the best of health , so I couldn ’ t take care of the issues as efficiently as I wanted to . I have discussed the issue with the tenants and they are seeking other residences as quickly as humanly possible .” While the board ruled at a special meeting on Aug . 22 that the village would immediately enforce six of the violations by removing garbage and vehicles that were littering the property , Ramcharitar said he was unaware of the fact that the village had done cleanup work on the site .
The landlord revealed that he was in the process of hiring two construction companies to fix the structural problems at the home . With the tenants leaving the property within two weeks and the house scheduled to be renovated , the matter could be resolved soon . “ I would certainly hope so ,” Walden Mayor Susan Rumbold said . “ The owner indicated that he was looking to hire some contractors to get in there and do what needs to be done to get the place back to where it needs to be . So I would hope that this is a positive resolution to the whole incident .”
Charles Savasta , who lives next door to 14 Riverview , expressed his gratitude to the panel , but warned that the same problems could crop up again in the future if
However , he added , “ In the coming months we will introduce the Spectrum brand of TV , internet and voice services to upstate communities . Spectrum offers the most HD channels ; the fastest introductory broadband speeds of 60 Mbps , with no data caps or modem fees ; and a fully featured voice service .”
Patricia Amendola , communications manager for Frontier ’ s east region , took on the challenge .
“ Our Internet speeds will be at least equal , and Frontier doesn ’ t have data caps ,” she said . “ Frontier is bringing choice and competition to Montgomery Village , as well as other local communities throughout Orange County , including Middletown , Town of Goshen , Chester , and Blooming Grove . Frontier has been serving the Orange County area for more than a century .”
She noted Frontier employees ’ community involvements , including Orange County Chamber , Hudson Valley Honor Flight and the Salvation Army .
As for comparative costs , McDermott said prices would not be available until after the village public hearing . However , Amendola expressed confidence in the value of competition .
“ Our pricing in our Connecticut markets is very competitive , and pricing and quality of service for Montgomery will also be very competitive , “ she said .
the landlord is lax with future tenants . “ Patience is a virtue and I appreciate all of the hard work you guys are doing ,” he said to the board . “ But if he cleans it up and then brings in the same kind of people , it will be the same vicious circle all over again .”
At the meeting , the board approved Local Law 7 of 2016 , which clarifies language in the village zoning ordinance in regards to Abandonment of Use . The new law removes the word voluntary from a section of the code about abandoned properties . The board also set a public hearing for its next session on Oct . 4 for Local Law 8 of 2016 , which deals with illegal drug use at rental properties . If adopted , the law would allow the village to evict tenants who have been charged with two or more drug use or possession counts at a given address .
Two months ago , Maybrook passed a similar law and Rumbold noted that Maybrook Mayor Dennis Leahy forwarded the idea to Walden . “ If his village does something interesting that may be of interest to our village , he ’ ll share that with me ,” Rumbold said . “ We also share information with them . It did look interesting , so I gave it to ( Village Manager ) John Revella and he agreed .” If the law passes , it could help in cutting down on illicit activity in the village . “ If you have tenants in certain buildings that are doing things that are against the law and it ’ s affecting other residents in the building or the neighborhood , it ’ s just a tool to use to get the tenants that are doing that kind of thing out of that building and neighborhood ,” Rumbold said .
A naming ceremony for the William J . Larkin Jr . Pavilion and Play Area in Bradley Park that was originally scheduled for Sept . 25 has been postponed . The tentative rescheduled date is Saturday , Oct . 15 at 11 a . m .
