Maybrook looks at developing new access road
By JESSICA COHEN
Lottie Rumpf says she has been coming to Maybrook Village Board meetings since 1973 , asking for zoning changes that would help her sell 43 acres between Route 208 and Neelytown Road . In the 1960 ’ s the land became useless , she said , because of zoning changes in the area that impeded farming and required lowdensity housing that would not appeal to developers
Last week Mayor Dennis Leahy announced a plan to build a road that would provide access to her land while also offering an alternate route , good for emergencies , should an accident on Homestead Ave . block Maybrook ’ s main streets . Leahy says the board will apply for a transportation department grant for the road that Rumpf says developers would need but couldn ’ t afford to build , at $ 500 per foot for a total of $ 3 million .
“ The board wants this road ,” said Stumpf . “ If the town wants it , they ’ ll do it .”
Stumpf ’ s family bought the land in 1943 and used it for farming . They had a dairy farm and chickens . But changes that drew people to areas close to the farm made farming difficult , she said . With people came broken glass and metal objects that would get into animals ’ digestive tracts , often via hay , she said .
“ Villages and farms don ’ t mix ,” said Stumpf . She compared her land to the land on Yasgur ’ s Farm , used for the big concert at Woodstock in 1969 .
“ After Woodstock , the land was dead ,” she said .
At one point , Rumpf said her taxes jumped from $ 700 to $ 8000 , but with legal help , she negotiated them down again . But she failed in her efforts to get higher density zoning that would make her land profitable for developers
“ The board doesn ’ t like town houses ,” she said . “ But no one would buy big houses there .”
Leahy says the new road would be a connector between Heard Rd . and Greening Way .
“ It ’ s a generic plan ,” he said . “ There may be other options .”
He said Village Trustee Robert Pritchard suggested the road as part of an economic development plan .
“ We ’ ve been talking for years about a second way to get through the village ,” said Leahy .
Meanwhile , as Halloween approaches , Leahy announced plans for celebrating

and celebration limitations . He said the village is planning festivities for children at the Maybrook Senior Center on Oct . 30 , at noon . Then trick or treating will be held in the village from 6 to 8 pm on Oct . 31 . However , because of recent child harassment by people in clown costumes , he said clown costumes are “ discouraged .” A curfew begins on Oct . 28 at 10 p . m . and ends at 6 a . m . on Nov . 1 for youth under 18 , said Leahy . During curfew hours , they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian .
Also coming up is the first Maybrook and VFW Post 2064 Run for Homeless Heroes 5k Race / Walk on Saturday , Oct . 22 . And 20 years after his death , a rededication of Danny Meyer Memorial Playground will take place on Oct . 20 at 6:30 , at the playground , where equipment is being replaced .
Leahy reminded village residents that mandatory water restriction is still in effect . No outside water can be used for lawns or washing vehicles . Watering cans can be used for gardens and plants .
