Pumpkin contest concludes summer season for Pine Bush Farmers Market

Her farm serves the Second Wind Community Supported Agriculture group ( CSA ), which has 60 participants buying shares of her produce . Patrick has been farming since she was 19 . She studied environmental science at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania , with a focus on sustainable agriculture . She was disappointed that her hometown in Pennsylvania became a site for gas drilling , which can contaminate soil .
Johnny King won the prize for growing the smallest pumpkin . Rather than planting the Atlantic Giant seeds he gave out , he used Baby Bear pumpkin seeds . However , in the past he has grown 200 pound pumpkins using the Atlantic Giant seeds .
“ You have to pay attention , making sure each plant has only one pumpkin growing on it ,” he said .
In the past he had a client with an apartment complex who liked to decorate with gargantuan pumpkins , but the market for decorative plants declined around 2008 , King said .
“ People prefer to spend on good food rather than decorations , “ he said .
He does more green house growing these days . His biggest selling crop is beefsteak

tomatoes , and second most popular are his potatoes . A second generation farmer , King majored in plant science at SUNY Cobleskill . This year his farm became “ certified naturally grown ,” he said .
“ It ’ s the same standards as organic ,
but inspection is done by farmers and cooperative extension members rather than the U . S . Department of Agriculture ,” he said .
The prize for most earnest pumpkin went to Warren Cone , of Pine Bush .
“ I never tried growing pumpkins before . I gave them lots of water ,” he said .
Although the October 15 farmers market was the last regular Pine Bush market of the season , there will be another on the Saturday before Thanksgiving , said Pine Bush Farmers Market coordinator and founder Liana Hoodes .
